Integrating Computer Technology into the Curriculum

Course Description
This course focuses on teaching and learning in a wide range of classroom environments. Instruction will entail and overview of current computer-based technologies, as well as ethical and legal issues. You will learn how to adapt the skills and knowledge necessary to effectively integrate these tools and skills into diverse curricula. Course content will include producing and editing a video, designing a digital book, creating a Web page, designing an electronic lesson plan and understanding the value of Web 2.0 tools. The course features two classroom meetings and two online meetings.

This is a Level II computer course and therefore the pace will be at an intermediate rapid learning level.

Prerequisites: Familiarity with computer basics such as toolbars, the mouse, copying, saving, and so on. In addition, participants should have basic familiarity with word processing, spreadsheets, simple e-mail functions, and searching the Internet.

Objectives
1) To provide an overview of current technologies and integrate key elements with effective teaching strategies to enhance curriculum and instruction.
2) To provide an understanding of how to organize and control information through use of electronic technologies and communication tools to improve classroom management.
3) To gain skills and strategies to customize classroom materials using a variety of integrated technologies and techniques to more profoundly affect teaching and learning.
4) To identify issues involving access, law, ethics and social implications in a democratic society.
5) To effectively use elements of e-communication for collaboration and acquisition of technological resources.
