"Something's Fishy"

About Something’s Fishy

I teach art to the 4th and 5th grades at Byrant E. S. Ms. Camp’s class at Bryant E. S. is a split 4th/5th grade class. I taught Something’s Fishy to her class. In this project the students learned how to mix secondary colors in watercolor while using fish as the subject matter.

I had brought in books on fish from around the world that the students just loved. From these books they got ideas on the variety of fish  that there are in the world and learned about the different parts of a fish. I also brought in a large color wheel and gave them a detailed lesson in color theory.

After looking at the fish books, students began drawing, in pencil, large fish on 9 x 12 drawing paper.  Once they were satisfied with their work they went over their pencil lines by pressing hard with a black crayon. Next came the watercolor!  Students very much enjoyed putting a primary color on one side of the fish and another primary on the other side and mixing the two colors in the middle to make a secondary.  Once dry, the fish were cut out and glued on a piece of construction paper that was the secondary color that students made in the middle of each fish. Three fish total were made, one for each secondary color.

Here are some comments that the students
wrote about the project “Something’s Fishy”

When I dew my fish it was cool. I liked how I drew the scales. They are bright and so is the fish. Now I think of these fish swimming together.

The fish project makes me feel like my uncle because he is an artist.

When I looked at my fish I did think it looked like flounder. I loved the colors we used because they were bright and would pop out. I remember us using pencil and the fish came out good.

What I remember about the fish is that we painted the fish in different colors. We used the primary color of blue, red, and yellow. We blended the colors.  I felt proud of my work.

When I did the fish project I was so happy. It felt so good once I was dong it. I felt so proud of myself when I was done.

What I remember of he fish is that it made me feel like I did good at it. It made me remember my friend and my cousin that went to another country. What I liked about the fish was that I got to paint the fish with wet paint and I also got to mix the wet color.

What I liked about doing the fish is you can make up your own kind of fish, or make it very creative.
